- AUTOCOM
- """""""""
-
- BACKGROUND
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The program AutoDoc was published in 199O and became an immediate success. The
- initial concept behind the program was the creation of scrollable text which is
- enhanced by colors and framed in handsome, customized designs called DecorEdge
- Bord`rs (DEB).
-
- During development of AutoDoc, ready-to-use (prefab) graphic scenes were added
- to permit users to display their text within colorful scenes of mountains and
- waterfalls, ships at sea, candle-lit scrolls and more. Some of these graphics
- allow your words to appear within the speech balloons of cartoon characters!
- The phrase "text-in-graphics" (abbreviated TIG) was coined by REXXCOM Systems.
-
- DISPLAY OF TIG FILES
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Initially the text-in-graphics files created by AutoDoc needed the full pro-
- gram for their display. Then REXXCOM developed the ADVUE viewers -- programs
- designed to display TIG files. Not only could files be displayed and the text
- scrolled line-by-line and page-by-page, but different versions of ADVUE were
- developed for special purposes and effects. For example, ADVUE-L can be used
- to link TIG files in a "continuous loop" for an attention-getting countertop
- display. With the advent of the ADVUEs came the introduction of high-intensity
- (HI-I) background colors. These produce an even more striking visual impact.
-
- AUTOCOM
- ~~~~~~~~~
- In 1991 REXXCOM completed development of AUTOCOM. This programming achievement
- was heralded as a major breakthrough in the TIG field. For the first time an
- AutoDoc-created file may be easily compiled into a stand-alone COM program!
-
- HOW TO DO IT
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- I. WITH AUTODOC
-
- (If you do not have AutoDoc skip to part II.)
-
- Load AutoDoc by typing its name and pressing your Enter key. If this is your
- first time, a "one time only" information screen will appear. After the color-
- ful sections of the title screen move into position, the main menu appears.
-
- Press "C" for Create. The Bord`r design screen appears. Review the basic
- designs by pressing up or down arrow keys. When you settle on a design, press
- "Esc" to lock it in. If you choose a customizable design press "C" and the
- custom-designing screen appears. Use arrow keys to move the cursor to any
- character and press "Enter." At once you see the Bord`r design as it appears
- with your chosen character. Try other characters to observe the effects. When
- you find one you like press "Esc" to lock it in. There are over 2OO choices!
-
- The next screen permits selection of Bord`r colors from over 12O combinations.
- (If using a monochrome system these screens are skipped). Review color combina-
- tions by moving the cursor from number to number. Each number is colored, mak-
- ing it easy to know its two corresponding colors (foreground and background).
- Press "Enter" to view your DecorEdge Bord`r in various color combinations as
- you choose different numbers. Press "Esc" to lock in the colors you like best.
-
-
-
- -2-
-
-
- The next screen is nearly identical to the last. It allows selection of the
- color combination of your text area. If you want the text to be displayed in
- the same combination of colors as the Bord`r, move the cursor to the appropri-
- ate number and press your Enter key. To see other combinations of colors,
- move to various numbers and press "Enter" each time. Finally, press "Esc" to
- lock in your text colors (chosen from over 12O combinations).
-
- The screen now displays your six choices (five if you did not choose a custom-
- izable Bord`r, or seven if you chose Bord`r No. 00 which has two customizable
- portions - the Bord`r and its "shadow"). At this point you are ready to enter
- the program's text editor, unless you decide to return to the main menu. If
- you return now your selections will be lost. You are given an opportunity to
- load in a pre-prepared ASCII text file. If you have one, press "Y". If not,
- press "N" and type your text. If you are anxious to try AUTOCOM, type a few
- words and press "Esc" - then follow the directions to save your file. Remember,
- AutoCom is saving your DecorEdge Bord`r in a DEB file, and your text in a DET
- (DecorEdge Text) file; each will have a name of your choice followed by the
- extension "DEB" or "DET."
-
- If you are using the Professional Edition of AutoDoc dated 1991 or later, and
- if you have AUTOCOM on the disk, not only will the DEB/DET files be saved, but
- your freestanding COM program will be created automatically. If you also have
- the program DIET on your disk your COM program will be "put on a diet" and made
- as small as possible (i.e.: reduced in size to fewer bytes). If you are using
- an older edition of AutoDoc, or the shareware version, you must exit AutoDoc to
- use AUTOCOM (and DIET, if you have it) separately. After exiting, type AUTOCOM
- and press "Enter." When the screen appears type the first name of your DEB/DET
- files into the box and press "Enter" again. In seconds your COM is ready to be
- used. Type its name and see it flash to your screen! (Shareware AUTOCOM is
- limited to a total of two screen pages. The professional edition makes COM
- programs up to 2O pages in length).
-
- II. WITHOUT AUTODOC
-
- If you do not have AutoDoc you will, of course, want to obtain it as soon as
- possible to enjoy creating customized DecorEdge Bord`rs and to use the many
- fantastic "prefab" DEB scenes for display of your own messages. In the mean-
- while, use AUTOCOM right now to see how quickly and nicely it will make a free-
- standing COM program out of the sample DEB/DET files enclosed. These files are
- called BANJO.DEB/BANJO.DET and HORSE.DEB/HORSE.DET. Even without AutoDoc you
- may put your own text into the DET and compile it with AUTOCOM.
-
- To type your own words into BANJO.DET or HORSE.DET do the following:
-
- A. Load BANJO.DET or HORSE.DET into a word processor or text editor.
- B. Note that the very first line is coded with 7 numbers. DO NOT CHANGE THESE!
- C. Delete the information text which begins on the second line, and set your
- word processor or text editor to the width shown by the 2nd number in the
- top line. Begin typing on line 2, leaving the top line untouched.
- D. A COM program made with shareware AUTOCOM will only display 2 screen pages
- of text. The 1st number of the DET code indicates number of lines per
- screen page. The professional AUTOCOM accepts up to 2O pages of text.
- E. After typing your text, save the file under its original name. Make sure
- you save it as an ASCII file (some word processors call this a DOS text
- file). Refer to your word processor's manual for information on this. If
- you use the word processor's "default save" the resulting DET file will not
- be usable. A text editor normally saves in ASCII, which is what you want.
-
-
-
- -3-
-
-
- Next type AUTOCOM and when the screen appears type BANJO (or HORSE) in the box
- and press your Enter key. That's all there is to it . . . you have compiled
- your own TIG COM program! Type BANJO (or HORSE), press "Enter" and be amazed!
-
- And don't worry . . . your DEB/DET files have not been "used up" - they are
- still on your disk waiting to be used again for another message! If you like,
- you may rename them or, better yet, make copies with new names. For example,
- if you want to send two messages in the form of COM programs to your friends
- Rich and Jan, type COPY BANJO.DE? RICH.DE? and press enter. Then type COPY
- BANJO.DE? JAN.DE? and press enter. You have just created four new files:
- RICH.DEB, RICH.DET, JAN.DEB, and JAN.DET. Now type your message to Jan after
- loading JAN.DET into your word processor/text editor as explained earlier.
- After saving it as an ASCII file use AUTOCOM to compile JAN.COM. Do the same
- with RICH.DET.
-
- Incidentally, it is possible to compile the COM program in one step instead of
- two by typing the name of your DEB/DET set on the DOS command line after the
- word AUTOCOM. To use the JAN example, here is what you would type: AUTOCOM JAN
- (then press "Enter"). This shortcut will save approximately one moment of your
- time, but you will not see the pretty AUTOCOM screen, and if there is an error
- (such as a missing file, or a mistyped name) you will not see the error message
- which the program would otherwise flash to your screen.
